JOHN CHANDOS describes the history and significance of the medieval custom of choosing a boy bishop to say prayers, dispense blessings and preach sermons as part of the lighthearted merrymaking of the Christmas season. He introduces extracts from one of the last sermons preached by a boy bishop - at Gloucester Cathedral in 1558. The extracts are read by DAVID PEARSON
