In Rugby Union's first World Cup, Wales took third place, while in cricket's equivalent, England finished runners-up to crown a splendid year for
MIKE GATTING.
STEVE DAVIS regained his world snooker title but NIGEL MANSELL just missed out again as drivers' champion. There was a shock for LLOYD HONEYGHAN who lost his world boxing titles in unfortunate fashion after three previous defences, and in Rome there were upsets for STEVE CRAM and DALEY THOMPSON. FATIMA WHITBREAD was Britain's only winner at the World Championships.
Also presentations for the Team of the Year and for the Overseas Personality - 1987 proved a good year for STEVE CAUTHEN , STEPHEN ROCHE and PAT CASH, while MARTINA NAVRATILOVA won her sixth Wimbledon singles title in a row.
