Sports Review of 1987

on BBC One London

Introduced by Desmond Lynam and Steve Rider
Live from the Television Centre, the very best of the year's sporting action, drama and entertainment. Once again, Britain's headline makers have gathered to help recall the memorable moments of 1987. and to pay tribute to the man or woman you have chosen as the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. It was a year of achievement in particular for Britain's golfers. NICK FALDO won the Open, IAN WOOSNAM the World Matchplay and both.under captain
TONY JACKLIN , helped engineer the historic defeat of the USA's Ryder Cup team on their own soil.
In football, England, with BRYAN ROBSON and GARY LINEKER outstanding, reached the European Championship finals, and Coventry City surprised everyone in the FA Cup. GRAEME SOUNESS took Rangers back to the top in Scotland.
In Rugby Union's first World Cup, Wales took third place, while in cricket's equivalent, England finished runners-up to crown a splendid year for
MIKE GATTING.
STEVE DAVIS regained his world snooker title but NIGEL MANSELL just missed out again as drivers' champion. There was a shock for LLOYD HONEYGHAN who lost his world boxing titles in unfortunate fashion after three previous defences, and in Rome there were upsets for STEVE CRAM and DALEY THOMPSON. FATIMA WHITBREAD was Britain's only winner at the World Championships.
Also presentations for the Team of the Year and for the Overseas Personality - 1987 proved a good year for STEVE CAUTHEN , STEPHEN ROCHE and PAT CASH, while MARTINA NAVRATILOVA won her sixth Wimbledon singles title in a row.
