The Music Biz: The Performance

on BBC Two England

Fifth of six programmes which tell the stories behind the multinational face of the pop music industry.
A look at the slickly professional production machine, the merchandising and the mountains of money behind two hours of heavy metal music as Metallica hit Milton Keynes with 400 tons of equipment in the biggest date of a two-year tour.
See today's choices.

The Music Biz 9.40pm BBC2
If anyone still has any illusions that the music industry might offer a glamorous lifestyle after watching the first five programmes, prepare to lose them now. Tonight's edition examines the most demanding of all rock 'n' roll rituals: the tour. "The only reason I go on the road is to get on stage," says Jon Bon Jovi. "The rest stinks. They pay me for the other 22 hours." The Music Biz joins US metal band Metallica as they prepare for a show at Milton Keynes Bowl, the final night of a two-year tour. And while the band are on stage, piles of unofficial merchandise and touted tickets are sold outside the gates.
