The Fight

on BBC Two England

3/4. A Dirty Business. Centred around the intense rivalry between Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta during the 1940s and 1950s, this is the story of boxing's long and inglorious association with the Mafia. Using intimidation and bribery, the Mob sealed lucrative TV contracts and management deals, exerting a stranglehold on boxing that lasted until 1964. That year, amid a wetter of corruption charges, the Mob saw their fighter Sonny Liston relinquish his world title to a young boxer named Cassius Clay.
