A story based on the actual experiences of a psychiatrist, Dr. Harry Wilmer, and his efforts to apply an advanced technique of group therapy in the treatment of severe mental illness. The patients in the special communal ward, all mentally ill American servicemen, begin to respond favourably, with one exception-a marine who remains so violent and destructive that the success of the entire experiment is threatened.
