Dan Smith is perhaps the most controversial provincial politician of this century. A revolutionary communist in the Second World War, he came to national prominence in the 60s with his plans for the redevelopment of city centres and his ideas for regional government. Then in 1974 came his downfall with his conviction and jail sentence for corruption.
