The Battle for Britain's Soul

on BBC Two England

2/4. Power to the People. The Rev Peter Owen-Jones explains how Victorian Britain marked a real turning point in religion, as a growing number of people - backed up by scientific discoveries - started to doubt the very truth of Christianity. Meanwhile, after nearly 2,000 years of being told how to worship, some discovered different ways of finding God as the new urban and industrial working class formed their own brand of Christianity, challenging the power of the man in the pulpit, while thousands deserted the Church of England to attend their own chapels.
