The Italian Film: The White Sheik

on BBC Two England

(Lo Sceicco Bianco) starring
Brunella Bovo Alberto Sordi
For his first film as a solo director,
Federico Fellini found inspiration in the popular comic-strip story magazines with their wildly improbable tales of romance and derring-do.
Fellini knew this world well - he had worked as an artist on the very magazines he satirises so brilliantly in The White Sheik.
Arriving in Rome on her honeymoon, Wanda promptly slips away to find her idol, the dashing hero of a melodramatic photostrip.
While her hapless husband is desperately keeping up appearances, Wanda is discovering the real man behind the glamorous image of the White Sheik.
