Beethoven's 33 Variations on a theme of Diabelli
In the second of two programmes to mark the 150th anniversary of Beethoven's death, the outstanding American pianist and writer CHARLES ROSEN introduces and plays the famous set of variations written by Beethoven on Anton Diabelli's little waltz theme. The last of his major works for piano, the 33 variations span every mood from ethereal beauty to coarse humour, and in many ways are a summary of Beethoven's art.
