South Africa, Sport and the Boycott

on BBC Two England

In defiance of the international sports boycott, an official English rugby team is about to leave for South Africa.
Among those who feel deep concern is sports journalist Ron Pickering. Last year he went to South Africa to see the situation for himself. He came back with a film described by the Daily Mail as an 'admirably even-handed documentary' and by the Afrikaans press as a 'tv-smeerprogram'. Tonight's programme shows a shortened version of that film, followed by a discussion chaired by David Dimbleby. Among those taking part is Dr Rudolf Opperman , President of the South African Olympic Committee. He makes no bones about how he sees the issue: 'Sport should be played for the sake of sport and not be used for political ends.'
