Christmas dinner at the Forge is interrupted by the arrival of a party of soldiers. Joe and Pip join them in the hunt for the two escaped convicts who are found struggling in a ditch. 'I took him and held him for you', shouts Magwitch. Just before he is rowed back to the prison ship he saves Pip from discovery. 'It were me, blacksmith, as took a file and pork pie from your house', he tells Joe.
