Ten films about development issues in India
7: We are so poor, but we are so many
In most Indian cities, nearly half the labour force are women. In Ahmedabad, working women have banded together to form the Self-Employed Women's Association. SEWA fights to prevent its members' exploitation, to redress their grievances, and to raise their status in the community.
Women like Lakshml Ben , a vegetable seller, Suraj Ben , an old clothes dealer, and Santok Ben , a carpenter, describe what SEWA has managed to achieve.
