A profile in three parts 1: Settler
Moshe Dayan, the General with the eyepatch who came to symbolise the fighting spirit of modern Israel, died suddenly last October. His was a remarkable story. Soldier, farmer, politician and amateur archaeologist in turn, he was to experience immense disappointments and ultimate triumph. In the first of three films, completed only months before his death, he describes the hardships facing the men and women who first returned 100 years ago to settle areas of Palestine for the Jewish people, and explains how their experiences echoed stories of the Bible he first heard as a child.
