There are several piano duets based on the well-known children's theme ' Chopsticks '. Probably, the most ingenious of all is the ' Paraphrases ' conceived by Borodin. It originally began as a joke, for the amusement of one of his adopted daughters, in the form of an improvised Polka with the ' Chopsticks ' theme forming a kind of counterpoint. It was so successful that Borodin's friends, Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui, and Liadov, joined in the fun, and they amused themselves by performing these ' Paraphrases ' with people who could not play the piano. The complete set of ' Paraphrases ' consists of twenty-four Variations, of which eight are by Rimsky-Korsakov, five by Cui, and eleven by Liadov, followed by a series of fifteen pieces, of which Borodin's contribution consists of the original Polka, a Mazurka, a ' Marche funèbre ', and a Requiem for male voices and organ.
