Joan went to Chile in the course of her dancing career, and married the folk-singer VICTOR JARA. When Salvador Allende 's government was overthrown by a right-wing coup in 1973, Victor was taken to the infamous Santiago boxing stadium. He was tortured and murdered. Joan later returned to England and dedicated herself to campaigning for the restoration of democracy in Chile.
