This week Donald Macleod is joined by pianist Peter Hill (who studied with Messiaen himself) and musicologist Nigel Simeone , who are currently collaborating on a new documentary biography of the enigmatic French composer, one of the few major composers of the last century for whom the Catholic church remained central to their life and work. Today, a look at Messiaen's formative years.
