Can you improve your mind with a pill? Some doctors, students and professionals across the US and Europe certainly think so. They are taking 'nootropics', or 'cognition enhancers', and these unlicensed drugs have just arrived in Britain. Horizon investigates this expanding but controversial area of the pharmaceutical industry. Could nootropics offer successful therapies for the diseases that impair thinking and memory in old age, and offer others 'better living through chemistry'?
