William Penn was the son of Admiral Sir William Penn. At Oxford he heard the preaching of Quaker Thomas Loe , and was sent down for nonconformity. He served in the Dutch wars, heard Loe again in Cork, and embraced Quakerism. He was strong minded and fearless; he preached a great deal in Britain and later he founded the state of Pennsylvania.
