Suez: a Very British Crisis

on BBC Two England

3/3. War. Prime Minister Anthony Eden effectively ended his political career when he took Britain to war over the Suez Canal. The invasion of Egypt caused an international outcry and America's refusal to bail Britain out halted the campaign. Reconstructions reveal how Eden (James Fox ) and his cabinet chose to defy world opinion in their attempts to seize control of the canal. As rumours mounted that Eden had colluded with Israel and France, he lied to the Commons, a sad conclusion to a dazzling career, which also marked the end of Britain's ability to act alone on the world stage. With Patrick Malahide and Khaled Elsawy.
