Jerzy SkoHmowski 's version of this Arthur Conan Doyle story gives a new dimension to its conceited hero.
Spain 1808, and in Napoleon's Peninsula Campaign the forces of Marshal Massena are cut off from the main French army. Napoleon plots to divert the English by letting a false message fall into their hands, choosing as his courier the brave and boastful Colonel Etienne Gerard.
