The World at War: 1: A New Germany

on BBC Two England

The first episode in a repeat run of the landmark television series, narrated by Laurence Olivier.
During the early thirties, Germany was a country gradually emerging from the depths of economic depression, with the pain of a humiliatingly conclusive defeat in the First World War still a recent memory.
Against this backdrop, Adolf Hitler was able to offer promises of regained pride and prosperity. Using film never publicly seen outside of Germany itself, this documentary demonstrates how Hitler was able to rise to power with the wholehearted support of millions of ordinary Germans. (R) (S)
