Time: October 1940. Place: New York Jeffrey Wilson , a successful play-adapter, married to a woman with whom he has really nothing in common, and his personal frustrations and anxieties brought to a climax by the way the war is going over in Europe, looks back over his past life. He remembers his ' small-town' young manhood, his early love, his experiences in the past world war, and his meeting when the war was over with Madge Hayes , the society girl above his own class, who was to become his wife.
