This is the story of the fantastically successful composer, Jerome Kern, from his ordinary beginnings to the time of his greatest musical hit, "Showboat". The film moves from New York to London and back to Broadway, and Judy Garland playing the well-known star of the thirties, Marilyn Miller, puts across a number of songs with her usual verve and charm.
Songs in the film include "Look for the silver lining," "Smoke gets in your eyes" and "Ol' Man River".
