The last in a series of four films about the world of journalism in different countries. Each is a portrait of a publication that stands outside the mainstream of its own society.
Proceso in Mexico
In a country where traditionally the press is wary of criticising the government and bribery of journalists is commonplace, one man. Julio Scherer , attempted to clean up the system. His courageous editorship of Mexico City's leading daily newspaper, Excelsior, where he fought vigorously for the principle of free speech, was abruptly curtailed by a government-inspired coup against him.
Today he edits an independent magazine, Proceso, possibly the only truly unfettered publication in the Mexican press. His lone struggle has been supported from abroad, especially in the United States. This summer Atlas Press gave him their award as International Editor of the Year.
