3,900 Million and One
For most of the world's 3,900 million people, a child means a vital addition to numbers in the battle for food and work. But the population will double within 25 years and can people control their fertility in time to avoid disaster?
Nanje Gowda lives with his six sons and their wives and children. With such a work force the family has achieved a fragile security, but this could be destroyed by the men's dissension. Among the women, one of the daughters-in-law is about to deliver. Another has lost three sons already: her husband threatens to leave her if she fails this time. What are the family's reactions to these events? What are the realities of their lives? This film studies the people that lie beyond the statistics of population.
