On 8 December this year, 20 years will have passed since the death of John Lennon. Mark Kermode introduces this intimate film that traces the making of the ex-Beatle's solo album Imagine, recorded in May 1971 at his Berkshire home with co-producers Phil Spector and Yoko Ono.
Cameras capture the rehearsing and recording of songs which collectively represented Lennon's most important post-Beatles work, including Jealous Guy, How Do You Sleep? and Gimme Some Truth, as well as the eponymous paean to peace, one of pop's best-loved songs. Alongside a plethora of hitherto unseen footage, celebrity visitors appearing in the film include Andy Warhol, Jack Nicholson and George Harrison.
