Two ballets by George Balanchine danced by the New York City Ballet
Introduced by Anthony Dowell Serenade
In 1934 Balanchine went to live in America and this ballet was the first he created after his arrival there. It has been in the repertory ever since, a perfect mirror of the romantic, elegiac music-Tchaikovsky's ' Serenade for Strings.' Episodes
Premiered in 1959, this ballet is danced to music by Webern. It is another example of Balanchine's deep understanding of music-his ability to ' visualise' the score. Episodes is a milestone of modern classicism.
