Jazz Scene at the Ronnie Scott Club

on BBC Two England

A series featuring some of Britain's top jazz artists at Europe's top Jazz Club
Tonight: The John Surman Quartet
John Surman (baritone and soprano saxophone), Mike Osborne (alto saxophone), Harry Miller (bass), Alan Jackson (drums)

John Surman is in the forefront of what might be called avant garde jazz in this country, and he has come very quickly to the notice of the jazz world as a most exciting saxophonist. This year, for the first time, he topped the Melody Maker jazz soloist poll, adding this to an already impressive list of awards in Britain and Europe. In tonight's programme he also plays soprano saxophone, an instrument in which renewed interest is being shown by many saxophone players.
The music is entirely written by John Surman and his partner in the quartet, Mike Osborne.
Introduced by Ronnie Scott
(Next week Jazz Scene features the Ronnie Ross Six, led by one of the best baritone sax players in Britain.)
