J. G. Farrell 's novel Troubles, set in Ireland in 1920, won for him the Faber Memorial Prize when it was first published. Two years ago his novel The Siege of Krishnapur, set in the Indian Mutiny in 1857, was awarded the coveted Booker Prize for fiction. Both books now appear in paperback, and JULIAN SYMONS talks to j.
