There is a legend that the apostle James, brother of John, was buried in north-west Spain. Around the tomb, a city grew in honour of this fisherman patron saint of Spain and his shrine attracted more pilgrims than anywhere else in Europe.
EDWIN MULLINS follows some of the paths the pilgrims trod and ends in Santiago as it celebrates its annual festival. St James's Day.
