Italian Cinema: Luchino Visconti's Rocco and his Brothers (Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli)

on BBC Two England

starring Alain Delon, Renato Salvatori, Annie Girardot with Claudia Cardinale, Katina Paxinou

The adventures of a large, unruly and passionate family who migrate from the poverty-stricken South to a large Northern industrial city.
Awarded the Jury Prize at Venice, Rocco is a tough, realistic and beautifully acted drama about Italy's biggest social problem-the difference in the standard of living between North and South. Both Katina Paxinou, as the mother who tries in vain to unite her unwieldy family, and Annie Girardot, as an outsider who desperately wants to become part of the family, give fine performances.
