Ken Campbell Meets Kirkby
What happens when you need a live theatre, live shows and there's nowhere to perform them? How can you provide entertainment for a community which has no theatres, concert halls or 'cultural centres'?
Kirkby New Town, seven miles from Liverpool, birthplace of Z Cars, population 66,000 (50 per cent under 21 years of age), exemplifies this problem. In November Ken Campbell was invited to take his new 'Road Show' to the people of Kirkby - to put on a show in the pubs, clubs, and neighbourhood community centres which are the town's only meeting places.
Four years ago Ken Campbell gave up acting to form a touring company to play comedy sketches in places where 'theatre' had never been heard of. His new show is a combination of music-hall routines, circus stunts, rude jokes and songs; his Company will be appearing 'Upstairs' at the Royal Court Theatre in London after Christmas - this week we see what kind of a reaction they got in Kirkby New Town.
