Naples, the Forgotten City

on BBC Radio 3

by Georgina Masson , author of Italian Gardens and Courtesans of the Italian Renaissance.
Today, the anniversary of the martyrdom of San Gennaro, Naples' patron saint, the people of Naples wait anxiously for the liquefaction of his blood. Old beliefs and practices still form one part of the city's way of life; another part lies in the very fabric of the city, especially in the ancient centre built upon Greek 'Neapolis '. Georgina Masson talks about the unity between the place and the people.
