British Films of the Fifties: Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities

on BBC Two England

Feature films from a decade of movie-making
Starring Dirk Bogarde, Dorothy Tutin, Cecil Parker
with Stephen Murray

Dirk Bogarde, as the ne'er-do-well Sydney Carton, mounts the guillotine to the immortal words 'It is a far, far better thing that I do' in this Rank-made, Tibby Clarke-scripted version of the Charles Dickens novel inspired by the French Revolution.
For Bogarde, cast in a part made famous on the screen by Ronald Colman, this was one of his first really testing acting assignments; for many other now-famous British players it was a chance to show their mettle. Watch out particularly for Rosalie Crutchley as Madame Defarge, queen of the tricoteuses.
