Part of a concert from the Usher Hall
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco celebrated his sixtieth birthday last April. He was born in Florence, of a Jewish family, and studied with Pizzetti; for the past sixteen years he has been living in the United States and is now an American citizen. His works include several operas and a large number of orchestral and chamber works, including seven Shakespearean concert overtures. He has also set to music, for voice and piano, all of the songs in Shakespeare's plays in the original English. He has written seven concertos for various instruments; the Guitar Concerto, one of the few ever composed for the instrument, was specially written for Segovia in 1939.
