Zone of Occupation

on BBC Two England

r Germany Under ] the British
! The last in a series of five programmes which looks at British rule in Germany after the Second World War.
Written by PATRICK O'DONOVAN Narrated by Leo McKern Let Germany Live
Two years after the end of the war, conditions in the British Zone were at their worst. Starvation was spreading; the black market was flourishing, and industrial reparations were destroying the livelihood of whole towns. The British began to be resented not as conquerors but as administrators. But a change was coming. Churchill himself spoke up on Germany's behalf. A new Military Governor stiffened morale. German political life was at last allowed to revive.
A new Germany began to be built. The threat from the East was bringing about new alignments. It was the beginning of the end of the Occupation. Among those taking part: Austen Albu
The Hon Sir Con O'Neill Lord Annan
Professor Ralf Dahrendorf
Film editor GEOFFREY BOTTERILL Producer PATRICIA MEEHAN
