A voyage of the imagination into the future on and outside our planet by Nigel Calder.
The second of three programmes.
The prospect of settling in Space concentrates the mind wonderfully on the prospects for transforming the Earth. The theme is life itself, and whether plants, animals and man can benefit from our discoveries in Space. Already built are systems for growing food crops in the eternal darkness of Space, and eco-dwellings that may be a model for space-villages. Translated back to Earth, ideas like these may rejuvenate our eroded and polluted planet. Professor John Postgate of Sussex University and Professor Sol Spiegelman of Columbia University consider how genetic processes, natural or artificial, can alter life on Earth or outside it - if our species can cope with the challenge.
