Professor Henry Louis Gates journeys through the continent of Africa in search of its hidden past.
The Swahili Coast. Gates begins his travels on East Africa's beautiful coast, journeying southwards from the medieval streets of Lamu in Kenya to the exotic island of Zanzibar. En route he attempts to unravel the mystery of why the Swahili people are so reluctant to call themselves Africans.

Stalin's Gulag-the system of labour camps central to the drive for industrialisation in Soviet Russia. Between the October Revolution of 1917 and Stalin's death in 1953, millions of people died in the camps which served mines, factories and building sites. From the outskirts of Moscow to the deserts of Central Asia and the snowy Arctic wastes, the film explores the legacy of the Gulag and hears from both its victims and perpetrators.
