The Giant Awakes

on BBC Two England

Moving the Mountain
"China. There lies a sleeping giant. Let him sleep on. When he wakes, he will shake the world."
It was Napoleon who inspired the title for this three-part view of China today by Michael Robinson , the first of which is subtitled Moving the Mountain.
Now the giant has indeed awoken, the collision of foreign capital and cheap local labour means that mountains can literally be moved into the sea to clear land for factories and housing. And with tens of millions of peasants learning new skills, threatening western jobs, the world is coming to realise the implications of the giant's awakening.
