A Greek general, an American reporter, a British consul and his wife, are among a group of people trapped on a Greek island during the war of 1912. Plague breaks out, and a peasant woman warns of the presence of a vorvolaka - a vampirish being that drains all joy from the living and possesses the newly dead. Boris Karloff stars as the dour general in another vintage excursion into terror by master producer Val Lewton.
