Jazz: The Adventure: Part 2

on BBC Two England

Continuing the series documenting the history of jazz.

As the series moves into the 1960s, Sarah Vaughan steals the spotlight as the top female jazz vocalist, John Coltrane transforms the song My Favourite Things into a freewheeling instrumental, while fellow saxophonist Ornette Coleman challenges all conventions with his "free jazz". Once again, jazz seems to be heading in exciting new directions, but even some jazz musicians start to question whether the new styles should really be included within the genre. Narrated by Keith David, with contributions from leading jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
