Chronicle: Storm in the Peninsula

on BBC Two England

"It was a situation of higher excitement and darker, deeper feeling than any other in human life" - a British officer on the night before the Battle of Bussaco
"We remained there three months basking in the sunshine of harmony and peace. It was the most pleasing event of my military life" - a British soldier on Madrid

These words were written 160 years ago about some of the events of the long war in Spain and Portugal against Napoleon's armies. The war gave us the word 'guerrilla' and it also gave us the passionate and brilliant work of the artist Goya.
Using the places, the pictures and the sounds of the time (for we even know the songs the men sang) Chronicle sets out to recreate certain episodes from those strangely modern years.
