Isidor Comes to Town

on BBC Television

View in Radio Times

by Harry Green
Based on a comedy by Aaron Hoffman
[Starring] Harry Green
with Walter Fitzgerald and Joan Rice
Before an invited audience at the Television Theatre

The action of the play takes place in Valley Falls, a remote town in New Hampshire, U.S.A.

Isidor Solomon, it is hardly necessary to say, is a Jew. He comes to a small town one New Year's Eve, a friendly, humorous little man, beaming the felicitations of the season to all around him. Perhaps he does not notice the resentment in the air; at least, he seems oblivious of having stumbled on one of those narrow rural communities - more ignorant than evil - where anti-Semitism is rife. Despite opposition Isidor decides to stay and go into business. The play - which mixes comedy and sentiment with its lessons in elementary humanity - is the story of how hates and prejudices are melted by his warmth, kindliness, and shrewd business sense.
