Live from Geneva: A World-wide Concert for Refugees

Many of the world's finest classical musicians perform tonight to show their support for the work of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Among the celebrities introducing tonight's Classic Aid concert will be Catherine Deneuve, Gina Lollobrigida, Peter Ustinov and tonight's principal conductor Lorin Maazel

The performers, in order of appearance, include
Kiri Te Kanawa (soprano) Yo Yo Ma (cello)
Jessye Norman (soprano) accompanied by Georg Solti (by satellite from Chicago)
Miguel Angel Estrella (piano) Carolyn Carlson (solo dancer) from Paris
Itzhak Perlman (violin) in New York
June Anderson (soprano) Barry Tuckwell (horn)
Sarah Brightman (soprano) Krystian Zimerman (piano) Frank-Peter Zimmermann (violin) and, from Tokyo, the New Japan Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa in Takemitsu's "November Steps". Zubin Mehta conducts the New York Philharmonic and in Geneva the Monte Carlo Orchestra will also be conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Muhai Tang
The programme includes arias from Verdi's "La Traviata" and Charpentier's "Louise" as well as popular pieces by Dvorak, Chopin, Elgar, Mozart and Paganini.
