In October 1943, Major Drew Bethell was released from his Italian POW camp. He was 22 years old. On foot, usually on his own and permanently under threat of discovery, he walked 500 miles over the Appenines to join the Allied lines north of Naples. In order to survive Drew came to rely on the Italian peasants who looked after him. To them he was always the stranger at the gate.
Forty four years later he told his son, Andrew, about this adventure for the very first time. Together they retraced the journey. But more than that, in reliving family history father and son learned more about each other. This documentary charts their journey. Sound CHRIS MOORE
