Jean, the young captain of the barge L'Atalante, marries Juliette, a country girl, and brings her aboard where they begin their married life in company with the mate - much-travelled old sailor called Pere Jules-a cabin boy, and Pere Jules's many cats. But the monotony of life on the canals becomes too much for Juliette and the glamour of Paris begins to beckon her...
