Sir Nikolaus Pevsner , who died last month, was best known for his series of handbooks, The Buildings of England - a survey of nearly every building of architectural interest from public lavatories to stately homes.
In this film, first shown in 1974 when the final two volumes were published, Robert Robinson journeys with Pevsner to Staffordshire to discover how the books were written. The late Ian Nairn , the architectural writer, and Sir Roy Strong , Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum , add their own assessments of Pevsner's great work.
