Russian Steps. Michael Palin 's trek, in the early nineties, from North Pole to South Pole takes him through a disintegrating superpower. Travelling by bus, train and barge from Leningrad, now St Petersburg, to Odessa in 12 days, he observes the hypocrisy of public penury and private plenty, consumes a large amount of home-made vodka, and revives his energies by being encased in medicinal mud at a crumbling sanatorium.
