Berwick-upon- Tweed, Northumberland
The local sandstone in this most northerly of English towns is rather sombre and there are few really distinguished buildings. But the Elizabethan ramparts are of European significance, the Vanbrughian Barracks are the earliest in Britain, and Robert Stephenson 's Border Bridge is one of the glories of the railway age. More recently, there has been excellent restoration of near-derelict houses but some of the craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired: 'Even the carved lions on the gate piers,' says
Alec Clifton-Taylor , 'seem perplexed.'
