Robert Erskine presents three programmes in which everyday life in classical times is re-created from letters of the period. 2: A Roman Gentleman
' At the recent election some of the voting-papers turned out to have jokes and obscenities scribbled on them! '
A reflection on the changing times from the letters of Pliny the Younger, a lawyer and senator in Rome around 100 AD. He deliberately published his letters much as prominent people do today, and from them a picture emerges of every aspect of Roman upper-class life; his legal activities, literary tastes and his opinions of his servants, wife, houses, the Emperor and the Senate.
